What Is Herbalism?
Herbalism or herbal medicine involves the use of remedies made from plants. This can be the leaves, berries, roots, barks and oils which are then made into tinctures, teas etc in order to treat a wide range of medical conditions.
A trained medical herbalist can offer specialist advice on the herbs that may help your specific symptoms and treat you in the most appropriate way, taking into account your medical history. Many people with the same condition could visit a medical herbalist and leave with very different prescriptions. Herbal medicine has never been more popular than it is today. More and more people are turning to herbalism as a kinder alternative to or compliment for mainstream medicine, with its over reliance on pharmaceutical products.
The form of Western Herbalism we use is based on the understanding that the body is capable of healing itself – it just needs the right support to do so. Therefore, we use herbs together with various other naturopathic techniques including nutrition, water therapy, fasting, detoxification etc to provide the right balance that the body needs to heal itself.
The aim is to treat the causes of disease rather than just the symptoms, because if we only treat the symptoms, then the underlying causes are still there and could result in another bout of illness, probably more serious than the first! By addressing the causes of ill health, we seek to improve both your medical condition as well as giving you more energy, vitality and a greater sense of wellbeing.
In this approach to health, people are treated as individuals, an approach that we find gets the best results. |
